Disembodied Voices: Edith Lombard School Playground

I didn’t expect the response to the Edith Lombard School ghost story, but the interest has made me consider a few things that happened in that area when I lived across from the school.

When I was younger, my mother and I often went over to the playground at night and sat on the swings to watch the stars and enjoy the starry sky on warm summer nights.

One summer night, as we sat there contemplating the meaning of life, we had a rather odd experience. I’m not sure if it was paranormal or if it was related to the haunting of the school, but it was one of those experiences that stays with you for a lifetime.

For those of you who are unaware, the Lombard School sits on the top of Schoolhouse Hill. It is approximately 1/4 mile from Smith’s Store and at least as far from the nearest houses on the road going towards Lee. At least at that time, there were no other houses nearby.

The night was quiet with no one around. Suddenly, out of seemingly nowhere, we heard a clear voice say, “I don’t care if you kill me or not. I don’t like you.”

We were both startled both by hearing a voice and because of the rather menacing message it portrayed. We jumped up and looked around and couldn’t find anyone.

We walked out to the top of the hill and looked down the road in both directions thinking someone may have been walking down the road and horsing around. There was no one along the road. Anyone walking would have still been in view and their footsteps would have been heard.

We walked around behind the school, and there was no sign of anyone.

We stayed and listened for a long time and never hear another voice or another sound. We never saw or heard any sign that anyone was around at all.

We never knew who or what we heard that night, but one thing was clear, we both heard the voice as clear as if someone were standing a few feet away. It definitely wasn’t a case of mistaking another sound for a voice.

But then, we had our share of spooky goings on in the house across the street, too.

    1. I honestly have no idea where the voice came from, but it was crystal clear, and there was no doubt about what it said.
