Speaking of doopelgangers

There is something about the thought that someone out there looks just like them that fascinates people. I mean, really, we grow up believing that we are unique, but the older we get the more we realize that none of us are as unique as we’d like to think. With the millions of people in the world, the odds that someone out there looks a lot like you increases everyday.

Take these two images, for example. Of course, we all know the image on the right is President Barack Obama, but are you so sure you’d be able to tell the difference if you encountered the man on the left? Ilham Anas, a 38-year-old from Indonesia has cashed in on his uncanny resemblance to Obama and has found work as an Obama impersonator. Ilham Anas has even played the president in commercials.

So what does it all mean? Probably nothing other than with the millions of people on earth it’s pretty likely that one of them – besides your great aunt – actually looks like you. But, does that mean they are your doppelganger? Not according to legend.

You see, the legend goes that a doppelganger is an exact double of you and seeing your doppelganger is supposed to be an omen of death. The name comes from the German for “double goer”.

So is there any evidence that doppelgangers exist and that seeing one foretells your death? Perhaps. Doppelgangers: Evil Twins or Body Doubles shares a few historical events and two personal events relating to doppelgangers.

Of course, no one is suggesting that Ilham Anas is really Obama’s doppelganger, but judging from the pictures I’ve seen, he comes pretty close.
